Create a portable profile

Jun 12, 2010

When you insert an external drive, Identity Safe automatically detects the presence of the drive. It displays the Create A New Profile dialog box and offers you the option to create a portable profile. You can choose an option, and then proceed to set a password and a name for your profile.

You can also use the Identity Safe Setup option to configure a portable profile. The option appears until you configure a local profile and portable profiles in all external drives that are connected to your PC.

By default, the phrase My removable media appears as the profile name. You can rename it as necessary. Symantec recommends that you provide a portable profile name that you can easily identify.

Note:

Ensure that the external drive on which you create a new profile has at least 5 megabytes (MB) of free space.
Norton Internet Security supports the following external drives on which you can create your portable profiles:
  • Universal Serial bus (USB) flash drives
  • Portable USB hard drives
  • Cameras
  • MP3 players
  • Cell phones
  • Zip drives

However, Norton Internet Security does not support devices such as floppy drives, CD drives, DVD drives, and devices that require Media Transfer Protocol or Picture Transfer Protocol.

If you create a portable profile while you are logged into a local profile, Identity Safe automatically logs you out of the local profile.
To create a portable profile
  1. In the Norton Internet Security main window, in the Web pane, click Settings.
  2. Under Identity Safe, in the Identity Safe Setup row, click Configure.
  3. In the Create A New Profile dialog box, select Removable Drive.

You can use the drop-down list that is available to select the external drive into which you want to create your portable profile.
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Set up Norton Identity Safe window, in the Password box, type a password.

The password strength is reflected in the graphic on the right side of this page.
  6. In the Confirm Password box, type your password again.
  7. In the Hint box, provide a hint that reminds you of the password if you forget it.

In case your password and hint are the same, Norton Internet Security warns you not to have a password hint same as your password.
  8. In the Profile name box, type a name for the portable profile.
  9. Choose one of the following options:

Require Identity Safe password at the beginning of each session Prompts for your Identity Safe password every time you log in to Identity Safe

You can change this setting in the Password & Security window.
Require Identity Safe password before each Login is filled out Prompts for your Identity Safe password whenever it tries to autofill any login

You can change this setting in the Password & Security window.
  10. Click Next.
  11. In the Manage Cards window that appears, you can create your first Identity Card if you want.
