Earlier this week, I wrote about the new beta version of the NIS and about new features and enhancements provided with Norton Internet Security 2012 beta. That's why I want to give you a little step by step guide that helps you download and install Norton Internet Security 2012 beta.

The April edition of the MessageLabs Intelligence report provides the latest threat trends for April 2011 to keep you informed regarding the ongoing fight against viruses, spam, spyware and other unwelcome content.

This month analysis reveals that targeted attacks intercepted by Symantec.cloud rose to 85 per day, the highest figure since March 2009 when the figure was 107 per day in the run-up to the G20 Summit held in London that year.

Simultaneously, in the aftermath of the Rustock botnet takedown, global spam volumes continued to fall and decreased by 6.4 percentage points since March to 72.9 percent in April. MessageLabs Intelligence also revealed that shortened URLs have become increasingly popular recently, being used to lure people to click on advertising links; a practice known as click-fraud.

  • Fake AV Redirect 19 — Misleading applications intentionally misrepresent the security status of a computer. Misleading applications attempt to convince the user that he or she must remove potentially malware or security risks (usually nonexistent or fake) from the computer. The application will hold the user hostage by refusing to allow him or her to remove or fix the phantom problems until the 'required' software is purchased and installed. Misleading applications often look convincing - the programs may look like legitimate security programs and often have corresponding websites with user testimonials, lists of features, etc.

  • MS Internet Explorer Memory Corruption CVE-2011-1345 2 — A defect in object lifetime management causes Internet Explorer to release an object twice which can lead to a delayed crash or even remote code execution.

  • MS Word SWF CVE-2011-0611 — Adobe Flash Player is a multimedia application for multiple platforms. Adobe Flash Player is prone to a remote memory-corruption vulnerability. Specifically, the issue is triggered when handling a malicious «.swf» file embedded in a Microsoft Word «.doc» file. An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code in the context of the user running the affected application. Failed exploit attempts will likely result in denial-of-service conditions.

Often, when a user wants to install or configure a computer application (especially if the user does not have sufficient experience working with this application), he may encounter different problems whose solutions can be found in special technical communication documents, known as the User’s Guide.

A software User Guide is essentially a book-length document containing instructions on installing, using, or troubleshooting a software product. A user guide can be very brief or it can a full-length book, and will contain a general getting-started information, precautionary information, various instructions, reference information, about the product and other useful information.

Like any other respectable company that cares about users’ experience, Symantec Corporation wrote software user guides for each version of Norton Internet Security product. Most of these user guides are described below and are available for download from the Symantec servers.
